Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that works to remove areas of localized fat from the body, helping patients achieve a slimmer and more balanced appearance. Despite the popularity of liposuction among patients, there are still many misconceptions about this procedure. Let’s take a look at some of the top liposuction myths, dispelled.
Top Myths about Liposuction
- Liposuction is a weight-loss procedure. This is perhaps the most common misconception surrounding this procedure. Despite what many people think, liposuction is not designed to help patients lose a significant amount of weight nor is it a substitute for a healthy diet and lifestyle. While liposuction contours the body by removing excess fat that cannot be eliminated with diet and exercise alone, patients will not be able to lose a significant amount of weight afterwards. In fact, the best candidates for liposuction are otherwise healthy patients who who are not significantly overweight, and who are healthy despite areas of body fat.
- Liposuction completely eliminates the chance of fat ever returning. This is not true. While liposuction does provide patients with long-lasting results, patients must keep in mind that the results may not be permanent. Following a liposuction procedure, patients should stick to a healthy diet and regular exercise program in order to maintain their current weight, and help ensure that the results of the procedure will last.
- Liposuction only benefits women. Men and women can both benefit from liposuction. If a man wants to reduce unwanted fat deposits from their body, liposuction is ideal.
- Liposuction is not a real surgery. There are many non-surgical procedures that target unwanted areas of fat, though liposuction is certainly not one of them! Patients who undergo liposuction will either need general anesthesia or heavy sedation during the procedure, meaning that it is an invasive surgery. Following liposuction, patients may need some time to recover and will need to wait at least a week before resuming normal activities.
