Abdominoplasty, which also goes by the moniker of “tummy tuck”, is a surgical procedure specifically for flattening your abdomen while giving it a great shape. This is done by first removing any excess skin and fat that may be present. Then, your abdominal muscles are tightened. This procedure is particularly useful for women who have gone through pregnancy. However, it is advised to women who plan to give birth again that they wait until after their final pregnancy to undergo this procedure. Like in the case of liposuction, this procedure is performed to get rid of fat deposits that are unresponsive to any diet and exercise regimen.
Things to Know About Abdominoplasty
- Before the procedure: The skin in your abdominal region can become quite loose after you lose a considerable amount of weight. Considering this fact, it is recommended that you lose as much weight as you can before undergoing the procedure. There will be a consultation session before the surgery during which you and your doctor will discuss the procedure in depth and help you understand the outcome.
- The procedure: The time required for the entire procedure to be performed will vary between two and five hours. This is dependent on your individual circumstances. Your doctor will advise you on whether or not you need to be hospitalized for the surgery. During the procedure, two incisions will be made. One of them will be around your navel and the other will be from one hip bone to another, near your pubic region. Then, the skin and muscles are separated, the muscles are then tightened (by pulling them into place and stitching them together), the skin is then place back, excess amounts are removed (along with excess fat), and the incisions will be closed. It may take several months to recover completely from the procedure. During the recovery period, your doctor will give you directions for taking care of yourself. Results will last provided you exercise on a regular basis and follow a good diet.
