But many of us have thin lips, devoid of the volume we envy in others. It used to be that the only thing you could do about it were lip implants, but most women didn’t want to go the surgical route. Restylane Silk and Juvéderm Volbella
You’ve heard of Restylane, the hyaluronic acid filler used for treatment of wrinkles such as nasolabial folds. It was the first dermal filler approved by the FDA back in 2005. In January of 2015 a new member was added to the Restylane family, Restylane Silk. Restylane Silk is a smooth gel designed to restore natural definition and symmetry to the lip and mouth area.
Juvéderm is the other big name in dermal fillers with various different options. In the summer of 2016, the Juvéderm line increased when Volbella was introduced. This was the second filler targeted for the lips, joining Juvéderm Ultra. Whereas Juvéderm Ultra adds noticeable fullness and plumps thin lips, Volbella is tailored to add subtle volume to the lips and smooth the appearance of vertical lip lines.
What do these fillers work on?
Dr. Smith uses Silk and Volbella in two ways: to enhance the lips and to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles on the lips and the surrounding areas. These wrinkles are sometimes called “barcode” lines, and these fillers fill out and erase them. They both do this without adding artificial-looking volume or over-plumping the lips.
How does it work?
Restylane Silk and Juvéderm Volbella (and Ultra) are clear hyaluronic acid gels that have been formulated specifically for the lips and surrounding areas of the face. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that occurs naturally in the human body. Its job is to plump and hydrate the skin. It does this by binding with nearby water molecules. Because the skin around the mouth is delicate, Silk and Volbella are formulated with smaller particles in a smooth texture. This smoothness makes these fillers very accurate when placed, an important fact for the lips.
