Surgical Treatment for Sagging Necks

Necks can sag for a variety of different reasons, like aging or significant weight loss. However, through a cosmetic procedure called a neck lift, it is possible to tighten the skin of your neck. While a neck lift can be performed alone, sometimes, face lifts may also be needed.

What Does a Neck Lift Involve?

If you have loose and saggy skin or loose muscles in your neck, then you are likely eligible for a neck lift. It is also important to make sure that you’re in good general health. Before the procedure, you will discuss the desired outcome with your surgeon.

  • Procedure: Neck lifts are typically performed as an outpatient procedure and may take anywhere between two and three hours. Based on your preference, you may either be given a local anesthetic and a sedative or a general anesthetic. A small incision is made just below your chin, though at times, incisions may also be needed behind your ears. There are two components involved in the procedure: cervicoplasty – for removing excess skin – and platysmaplasty – for altering your neck muscles. If there is excess fat present, then liposuction will be performed to remove it. Finally, the incisions will be sewn back together.
  • Recovery: Bruising and swelling will be present after the surgery for a period of up to 10 days. During the first few days, you should try to avoid neck movement. For the first two days immediately after the procedure, using cold compresses and keeping your head in an elevated position will help to reduce swelling and aid recovery. If called for, your doctor will prescribe medicines that provide relief from any sort of discomfort. Your sutures will be kept in place for a week. Once your bruising and swelling goes away, you can start working again. It is, however, important to refrain from exerting activities for six weeks.
